Cornflower Blue - Volga Linen
.

Volga is known for its beautiful, high-quality linen. Can you tell us about the design inspiration and production process behind your products?

Our design inspiration often comes from our rich archive of 17th and 18th-century Eastern European woodcut prints. For our recently launched printed linens, we have celebrated the Flax flower at the heart of our linen story, taking inspiration from fields of wildflowers. Volga's production spans across Europe, and we collaborate with some of the oldest family-run mills still in operation.

Linen is one of the most widely used fibres in the interiors industry. Why do you think that is?

Linen is the oldest fibre known to have been used by humans and offers endless versatility. Linen fabrics can be woven to abounding weights - making it the perfect choice for upholstery, sumptuous drapes, or even as a wall covering. A delicate linen voile can diffuse the light at a window, or drawn thread linen draped around a four-poster bed can add drama or subtlety in equal measure.

What role does sustainability play for your brand and business?

Our range of fabrics and products are made from 100% pure linen. Linen is made from flax – a fast-growing, renewable resource that is widely recognised as one of the most sustainable raw materials in the world. A field of flax requires no additional irrigation – it gains all the moisture it needs from natural rainfall. It is also an incredibly hardy crop, requiring significantly fewer pesticides and fertilisers than cotton. Once harvested, very little is wasted, as all parts of the plant are used across a wide range of industries, from cosmetics to animal feed. And, at the end of its lifespan, linen is also fully biodegradable.

Textured Stripe - Volga Linen

.

Recently there's been a real surge in the popularity of stripes. What do you think is driving the trend and how has it influenced your collection?

Stripes are a complimentary choice in any interior scheme - juxtaposing a strong print or a vivid plain weave colour. We've always been known for our broad stripe range, as well as our double-width textured stripes. More recently, we've added to our bold and narrow stripes in a variety of colours, available on a white or natural base.
