I’ve always loved how a fabric can stop you in your tracks.
Not because of the colour, or even the design - but because it feels familiar. Like you’ve seen it before. And then suddenly you realise… you have.
Maybe it was a pair of curtains in your childhood home. Or wallpaper at your Granny’s house. Or a chair you used to sit on without ever really noticing the pattern - until years later, when it comes rushing back.
That’s the thing about vintage fabrics. They’re never just fabric. They’re memory.
Why Certain Prints Stay With Us
It’s funny how something as simple as a floral print or a stripe can stay with you for years.
You don’t consciously remember it - but then you see it again, and it instantly takes you somewhere. A room, a feeling, a moment.
I think fabrics are so powerful because they’re always around us. In the background of everyday life. Quietly becoming part of our story.
Bringing Those Memories Back Into Your Home
In my own home, I’ve brought back a Sanderson vintage fabric that my Granny had as wallpaper when I was growing up. And honestly, it’s more than just a design choice. It feels comforting - familiar. Like a little piece of my childhood, now part of my everyday again. I used it to make an underskirt which feels like such a lovely way of keeping that memory close, but in a completely new form.
That’s what I love about vintage textiles, you can reinterpret them in a way that suits your life now, while still holding onto what they meant then.
From Curtains to Conversation Pieces
One of my favourite projects was working with an old pair of donated curtains and turning them into a jacket with fashion designer Justine Tabak.
The response was incredible. I had so many messages saying, “I know that print!” - which just proves the point. These fabrics don’t belong to one person or one home. They’re part of a shared visual history.
Sustainable, Yes - But Also So Much More
Of course, using vintage fabrics is a more sustainable way to decorate or dress. But if I’m honest, that’s not the main reason I love them. It’s the feeling they bring the story. the history and the fact that they’ve already lived a life before reaching you. You’re not just choosing something beautiful - you’re choosing something meaningful.
Creating a Home That Feels Like You
Your home shouldn’t just look good - it should feel right. It should be full of pieces that make you smile, that comfort you, that remind you of something (even if you can’t quite put your finger on what). Vintage fabrics have a way of doing that without trying too hard. Because sometimes the things we’re most drawn to… are the things we’ve loved before.
