Questions To Ask Yourself Before Buying New

Questions To Ask Yourself Before Buying New

Let’s be honest - it’s easy to fall head over heels for a new cushion, lamp, or rug when you’re scrolling through interiors inspo or wandering around your favourite shop. We’ve all been there. But before you click add to basket, we think there’s magic in slowing down and asking a few thoughtful questions. Being more mindful with how (and what) we buy doesn’t just help the planet - it helps us create homes that truly feel like us.

Here are seven questions we always ask ourselves before bringing something new into our space:

1. Can I get the same look using something I already have?

Before you buy, have a rummage - you might be surprised by what’s already in your cupboards, under your bed, or tucked away in the loft. Could a tablecloth be turned into curtains? Can you rearrange a few pieces to freshen things up? Sometimes a simple shift is all it takes to feel brand new.

2. Am I giving in to a popular trend, or do I really love it?

We all get tempted by what's in fashion, but do you love it now and do you think you’ll love it next year? Trends come and go, but your personal style is a keeper. Ask yourself if it really suits your home, or if it’s just Instagram whispering in your ear.

3. Can I make it myself instead of buying new?

This one’s a bit of a secret superpower. If you’re even slightly crafty, you might find that you can sew, paint, re-cover or upcycle something yourself. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to be you. Plus, there’s nothing quite like saying, “Thanks, I made it” when someone compliments your creation.

4. Can I find something similar that is second-hand or vintage?

There are treasures to be found in second-hand shops, markets, and online marketplaces. It might take a little more digging, but the thrill of the hunt is half the fun. And vintage pieces often come with bags more charm (and a story or two to tell).

5. Is the piece well made / will it last a decent amount of time?

A well-made item is like a good friend - reliable, timeless, and worth investing in. Whether you’re buying new or not, give it a once-over. Does it feel sturdy? Is the fabric durable? Will it age well?

6. What is it made of, how is it made, and who is it made by?

It’s easy to overlook, but materials and craftsmanship matter. Natural fibres, responsible makers, fair wages — these things count. If you can, dig a little into where your piece comes from and who’s behind it. It makes a difference (and adds meaning, too).

7. How do I recycle or rehome it at the end of its life?

Before you buy, imagine the end of the journey. Can it be passed on, recycled or repurposed? Thinking ahead means less waste later, and helps us all do our bit for a more circular way of living.
