How to Make Your Own Cushion Cover Using Haines Collection Fabric

If you’ve been itching to add a pop of personality to your home, sewing your own cushion cover is one of the fastest, most satisfying DIY wins out there. And when you use beautiful, sustainable, low impact Haines Collection fabric, you get the joy of crafting and the feel-good factor of rescuing designer textiles from landfill. Win-win.

In this guide, we’ll walk through exactly what you need, how much fabric to buy, and the simple steps to whip up a professional-looking cushion cover - even if you’re not a sewing pro.

What You’ll Need

  • Haines Collection fabric (details below!)

  • A cushion pad (commonly 40×40cm, 45×45cm or 50×50cm)

  • Sewing machine (or a needle if you’re going old school)

  • Matching thread

  • Fabric scissors or rotary cutter

  • Pins or clips

  • Tape measure

  • Iron and ironing board

  • Zip or buttons (optional, depending on your closure style)

How Much Fabric Do You Need?

For a standard square cushion cover, here’s a quick guide:

  • 40×40 cm cushion → 50 cm of fabric

  • 45×45 cm cushion → 50–60 cm of fabric

  • 50×50 cm cushion → 60 cm of fabric

Most Haines Collection fabrics are perfect for cushions - sturdy, beautiful, and with plenty of character. If the pattern is large or directional, you may want to add an extra 10–20 cm so you can line up the print just right.

A safe rule of thumb:
Buy the height of your cushion pad + 10 cm for seam allowance and wiggle room.

Step-by-Step: Sew an Envelope-Style Cushion Cover

This is the easiest, no-stress method - no zips required, just clever folding.

1. Measure and Cut

Cut one piece of fabric for the front:

  • Your cushion size + 2 cm seam allowance on each side.
Example: For a 45×45 cushion, cut 49×49 cm.

Cut two pieces for the overlapping back panels:

  • Same height as the front piece

  • Width = half the cushion size + 8–10 cm for each piece

2. Hem the Back Panels

Fold one long edge of each back piece over by 1 cm, then again by 1 cm. Press and stitch—this will be the clean inner opening of your envelope.

3. Assemble Your Cover

Lay the front piece right side up. Place the back panels right side down, overlapping in the middle. Pin everything together.

4. Sew It Up

Sew around all four sides with a 1 cm seam allowance. Trim the corners to reduce bulk.

5. Turn and Stuff

Flip your cover right-side out, poke out the corners, give it a quick press, and slide in your cushion pad. Done!
